Seeking freelance managing editor for the journal Rhetoric, Politics & Culture

This part-time position would support the journal’s editorial office by assisting with administrative tasks such as monitoring peer review and revision deadlines, organizing incoming submissions, and corresponding with authors. Though this position will be funded by the Press, the managing editor will work closely with RPC’s two coeditors. This is a remote position, and the workload will vary from week to week depending on the submission load, with an estimated average of 3–5 hours per week and 30–40 weeks per year. The ideal candidate has a scholarly interest in the humanities, especially in the fields of rhetoric, communication, or composition, and/or is interested in learning more about the management of a journal’s editorial office.

Rhetoric, Politics & Culture embraces a pluralistic approach to rhetorical scholarship. The journal is open to a variety of methodological approaches, from close textual and/or historical analysis to critical/cultural, ethnographic, performative, artistic, and/or theoretical work. The journal invites scholarship on rhetorics of marginalization, structure, materiality, and power; politics, advocacy, and activism; and beyond. Foremost to its mission is featuring perspectives that question in/justice, in/equity, power, and democracy and that attend to interlocking structures of power within their geopolitical and historical contexts. This journal also invites rhetorical scholarship that archives, documents, theorizes, or participates in forms of individual and collective public interventions, advocacy, activism, and resistance to such structures. RPC is published 2 times per year by Michigan State University Press.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring incoming submissions for assignment to editors
  • Tracking peer review and revision deadlines and following up as necessary
  • Helping to maintain peer reviewer database, email templates, and submission documentation
  • Monitoring RPC email inbox to answer basic queries about submissions and deadlines
  • Helping to prepare accepted articles for submission to the press for publication
  • Other administrative duties as needed

Desired qualifications: The successful candidate should have excellent written communication skills and an organized working style, an ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple deadlines, and competency with Microsoft Word and Excel.

Rate of Pay: $20.00 per hour. Hours: 3 to 5 hours per week, 30 to 40 weeks per year, depending on submission levels/workload from week to week. This position is remote, and working hours are flexible, but the managing editor will be required to check in with the RPC coeditors and MSU Press on a regular basis.
