Peña Jr., Dean of Chicano Politics. The Awards are produced by Latino Literacy Now, a nonprofit organization co-founded in 1997 by Edward James Olmos and Kirk Whisler.

José Angel Gutiérrez founded the Center for Mexican American Studies at University of Texas at Arlington. Dr. Gutierrez has written over a dozen books and is Professor Emeritus of the University of Texas Arlington as well as a practicing attorney in Dallas, Texas. The awards ceremony was held September 8, 2018, in California State University Dominguez Hills campus in Carson City.
